Exceptional Scarp Preservation in SW Namibia Reveals Geological Controls on Large Magnitude Intraplate Seismicity in Southern Africa

چکیده

Abstract Four previously unrecognized neotectonic fault scarps in southwest Namibia are described. These relatively straight, simple but segmented structures 16–80 km long and have measured vertical separations of 0.7–10.2 m. We estimate that each is capable producing earthquakes M w 6.4 or greater, indicating large may occur despite limited cumulative displacement. There strong evidence some these were formed by repeated earthquakes. Comparison with aeromagnetic geological maps reveal the normal faults reactivate major crustal weaknesses orientated north‐south northwest‐southeast perpendicular to local gravitational potential energy gradient. The presence an area a record instrumental seismicity suggests max this region be much larger than generally assumed. They highlight necessity incorporating information from studies into probabilistic seismic hazard assessments region, similar way other stable continental regions such as Australia. fact gone hitherto unrecorded significant further research needed characterize sources hazard. identification apparent cluster magnitude related exceptional preservation rather comparatively rapid deformation. If interpretation correct, then represent important indication across occurrence infrequent large‐magnitude on should considered throughout southwestern Africa.

Special Section: Intraplate Seismicity

Re-evaluated intensity distributions for the 1897 Mw 8.0 Shillong and the 1905 Mw 7.8 Kangra earthquakes, combined with geodetic constraints on rupture geometries, allow us to compare observed distributions of intensity with theoretically predicted shaking. The difference between predicted and observed shaking is interpreted in terms of the site response of the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins. Th...

Does seismicity delineate zones where future large earthquakes are likely to occur in intraplate environments?

The spatial distribution of seismicity is often used as one of the indicators of zones where future large earthquakes are likely to occur. This is particularly true for intraplate regions such as the central and eastern United States, where geology is markedly enigmatic for delineating seismically active areas. Although using past seismicity for this purpose may be intuitively appealing, it is ...

Novel Arenavirus Isolates from Namaqua Rock Mice, Namibia, Southern Africa

Arenaviruses are feared as agents that cause viral hemorrhagic fevers. We report the identification, isolation, and genetic characterization of 2 novel arenaviruses from Namaqua rock mice in Namibia. These findings extend knowledge of the distribution and diversity of arenaviruses in Africa.

Southern Africa ports as spaces of HIV vulnerability: case studies from South Africa and Namibia.

There is increasing recognition that in order to respond to the HIV epidemic migrants and mobile populations must be included in national and regional responses. While migration in and of itself does not necessarily contribute to increased risk of HIV infection, some migrants and mobile populations do face increased HIV risk. With its immense coastline and extensive transport industry, Southern...

Crustal geophysics and seismicity in southern California

S U M M A R Y The geographical distribution of the (1981–2005) seismicity in southern California forms a ±150 km broad zone adjacent to the Pacific–North America plate boundary, ranging from depths of ∼1–∼30 km, with the bulk of the focal depths in the range of 2–12 km. The distribution of the seismicity that includes both mainshock–aftershock sequences and background events is affected by both...
